The Sunrise

Bestseller Victoria Hislop has another hit on her hands with her latest offering The Sunrise. It’s set in 1972 in the city of Famagusta, Cyprus, where hotels are being built during a tourism boom.

Luxurious The Sunrise is one of them and Hislop’s plot centres around its owners – Savvas and his wife Aphroditi - and their staff.

The hotel is incredibly successful but the business and whole city is threatened by a coup in mainland Greece, causing Turkish forces to invade the island to protect Turkish Cypriots. People in this minority group are soon pitted against their Greek Cypriot neighbours and the death toll starts to rise steeply.

This book is exciting and packed full of plot strands that touch on tragedy, romance and friendship. It’s slow to start but is unpredictable throughout and a delightful read.
