HARUKI MURAKAMI is so well regarded that his publishers are bold enough to put only his surname on the cover of his novels. His latest offering, which comes three years after his epic re- imagining of George Orwell’s 1984, is entitled Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. It shifted a million copies in its first week when published in Japan earlier this year.

Tsukuru, the book’s protagonist, is unaccountably ostracised by his four best friends one day while in university.
