Grey is the new black

OK it’s not the most exciting colour on the spectrum, but catwalks have seen loads of dove, slate and charcoal for autumn.

Grey is the new black

“Grey is less harsh against most complexions than black and there is a shade to suit everyone,” says Colour Me Beautiful’s Fiona Wellins.

Here are a few different ways to wear it.

Minimalist

Minimalist grey outfit from River Island
Jumper, £45, trousers, £35 bag, £45, mules, £58, all River Island (Handout/PA)

“The best description of the grey trend this season is ‘off-duty chic’,” Wellins says. “The look is effortlessly stylish and understated.”

Marks & Spencer grey skirt

Think unfussy details and straight lines that will elongate your silhouette. A long wool waistcoat, midi skirt or sleeveless jacket will ease you into autumn.

Textured

Grey outfit from Hobbs
Viola gilet, £899, wool waistcoat, £199, Rue rollneck, £99, Dora skirt, £119, Agatha brogues, £179, all Hobbs (Handout/PA)

If you’re more about texture and cosiness, give grey instant depth with fuzzy and furry statement pieces. Team a big, fluffy knit with a slick A-line leather skirt.

Topshop jumper
Topshop Unique contrast jumper, £75 (Handout/PA)

The high street has plenty of ready-made contrasts with jumpers, coats and tops featuring furry panels.

Glamorous

With a little boost, grey can be just as dazzling as black for eveningwear.

Metallic top from jacquard
Definitions at Very metallic jacquard top, £27 (Handout/PA)

Look for a jacquard top or dress with a grey backdrop and a hint of metallic that will transfer easily from desk to dancefloor.
