6 fashion tips for this weird inbetween season

When it comes to the seasons, fashion is always one giant leap ahead. You’ll already have seen warm clothes in the shops and screamed “but it’s still August!”

If you’re wondering what on earth to buy at the moment, invest in trans-seasonal pieces or mix and match staples from both seasons for the awkward in-between climate.

1. Layer up

Use a cami or tee as your base layer, add a super-fine knit on top, and then a lightweight jacket. Kimonos can look too summery but a duster coat is the ideal transitional cover-up. Lightweight, long and loose, wear with heels to elongate your silhouette.

For a more substantial cover-up, try a fluid trench coat in a versatile tone that you can wear loose or belted. Roll up the sleeves if temperatures are still balmy.

2. Don’t ditch the pastels

Good news if you’ve become addicted to summer’s pastel shades – they’re sticking around for next season. The pale tones will give your summer-autumn outfit a lift.

For a clean, fresh look, try a collarless coat in mint green, baby blue or candy pink, or wear heavier textures in icy pastel colours.

3. Embrace the midi-skirt

If shorts and minis suddenly feel too summery but you’re not ready for opaques, reach for a midi skirt. Hovering around your shins, it’s the perfect length to wear without tights.

In warmer weather, wear your midi with block heel sandals and switch for socks and ankle boots when temperatures cool.

4. Use what’s already in your wardrobe

You can completely transform a piece of clothing with some re-styling tweaks. Give a shirt dress an autumnal edge by buttoning up to the neck and adding a statement necklace. You can also work a flimsy print shirt by wearing a jumper over the top and exposing your collar and cuffs.

5. Update florals

Florals are on trend for both the summer and autumn seasons but, for autumn, they’re moodier with a darker base. Continue wearing your favourite floral skirts and trousers but tone them down by teaming with stark, black separates.

6. Add chunky accessories to summer dresses

Never underestimate the power of accessories. You can step into autumn while still wearing your favourite summer dress, with a pair of smart ankle boots or loafers. As temperatures drop, add tights and a scarf or snood. Blue scarf from White stuffDreaming Away blue scarf, White Stuff(PA/Handout)
