The three male and two female kittens had been discarded in an old case on a footpath in Grangetown, Cardiff.

One kitten had been stuck in the zipper of the suitcase and another had a sore right eye but they are described as “in a healthy condition” by the RSPCA, which is now looking after them.

It is thought they are about nine weeks old. They were found on August 1.

RSPCA animal collection officer Rachel Chapman said: “It is just so sad that someone has just left them. We would rather the person called us first instead of just being irresponsible and abandoning their pets.”

The RSPCA will rehome the cats if owners do not come forward.
