Rare Cook paintings feature of Marsh’s sale

CORK items, small collectible pieces and Irish art all feature strongly at Marsh’s sale of 500 lots of residual contents from the estate of late solicitor Charlie Hennessy next Saturday at noon. Rarities include two paintings by the Bandon born artist, Charles Henry Cook.

Born in 1830 he first exhibited at the RHA in 1846 and again at the RHA in 1865, moved to Bath in England in 1870 and died at Scarborough in 1906.

The two works in the sale are The Cork Fiddle Player and The Musician and each one is estimated at €2,000-€3,000.

There is art by Lady Kate Dobbin, Sylvia Cooke-Collis, Fergal O’Ryan, Maurice Desmond, Michael Gemmell and others. There is a large selection of gilt pier mirrors and a pair of 19th century oval giltwood wall mirrors estimated at €4,000-€6,000.

A pair of matching 19th cnetury giltwood console tables are estimated at €2,000-€4,000.

Collectibles include a map of Monkstown, Co Cork, dated 1862 and a silver cup presented to the Royal Munster Yacht Club in 1904 by Col. Hirkman-Morgan, High Sherriff of Cork, for competition at Monkstown Regatta. There is also some Cork glass.

Viewing at Rochfort’s Lane, off South Mall/Grand Parade in Cork City centre is from 10.30am to 9pm next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and on this day week.
