Beginner’s pluck: Michael Delahunty

Michael became interested in photography when a friend taught him how to develop black and white pictures. He brought his first camera at 14, having saved up for it for a year. It cost £3.26.

Beginner’s pluck: Michael Delahunty

“I visited the camera several times before I bought it,” he says, “and when I had bought it, I couldn’t afford the film.”

At fifteen, Michael had two of the only five Irish pictures exhibited that year in the Irish Salon of Photography.

“The other three were press photographers, so I was proud of myself,” he says.

An accountant, Michael worked for many major companies, ending up with Nypro Ireland in Bray, as the finance director for Europe and Asia. Retiring last year, Michael now has time to pursue his ongoing passion for photography.

THE DEBUT

This is Wicklow

The Collins Press

€14.99

Michael decided to compile the book when, after hill walking with a camera for a year, he realised he could produce a book.

“I then set about it in a conscious way, studying the map of Wicklow. I got a good break when Wicklow tourism commissioned photographs of different towns in Wicklow for tourist brochures. I then filled in the gaps, hiking to some places up to ten times before a shot was right.”

The Verdict: A stunning book giving a comprehensive portrait of County Wicklow.
