Scene & Heard: Todd Terje drops debut album

Poor old 50 Cent may be down a few shillings after a court in the US ordered he pay $16m to headphones manufacturer Sleek Audio after he started a venture with the company, but ended up producing similar headphones with a different company. Another bad boy mentioned in a court room this week was Liam Gallagher, whose adultery with an American journalist was grounds for a quickie divorce granted to former All Saints singer Nicole Appleton. Meanwhile, Chili Pepper bassist Flea has gotten involved in yet another side project. Joining up with two members of Mars Volta for a new band, entitled Antemasque. Todd Terje has long been the king of the re-edit and follow-on success with his own material such as ‘Inspector Norse’ has led to the Norwegian electronic star’s debut album. Imaginatively titled It’s Album Time, it includes vocals by Bryan Ferry on a cover version of Robert Palmer’s ‘Johnny and Mary’. Another producer teaming up with a star of the ‘70s is Ben Watt from Everything But The Girl. His new album, Hendra, features Dave Gilmour, as well as Bernard Butler of Suede.

GIG WISE: Tickets went on sale this morning for Kanye West and Pharrell Williams at Marlay Park in Dublin on July 2. The impressive double bill will cost you €59.50 plus booking fee. For something completely different, Mick Flannery releases a new album, By the Rule, on May 9, and an Irish tour includes Dolans Limerick, May 16; INEC Killarney, May 17; De Barras Clonakilty, May 27; Lodge Mallow, May 28; and Pavilion, Cork, May 29. Amp Fiddler played some fine gigs in Ireland about 10 years ago, and the Detroit funkster returns on June 13 for an appearance at the Sugar Club in Dublin. Neville Staple of The Specials is the headliner for the Tramore Ska Fest in Co Waterford next weekend.

COMEDY CAPERS: The Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival (June 26-27) recently finalised its line-up, with Irish heavyweights such as Des Bishop, Dara Ó Briain and Tommy Tiernan leading a cast of thousands. Cork Opera House has a decent roster of funny people on the way in the months ahead, including June Rodgers (June 8), Panti Bliss (June 14) and Lee Evans (June 26 and 27). David McSavage has announced an appearance at Vicar St on June 27.

FILM TIPS: UCC filmmaker Stephen Bean is to screen his short film Mnemosyne Lay In Dust: Memories Of Austin Clarke at the IFI in Dublin on April 21. The film is a visual take on Clarke’s deeply personal poem, and is being shown as part of the capital’s One City One Book initiative, which focuses this year on If Ever You Go: a map of Dublin in poetry and song. At Triskel Christchurch in Cork, films from Sunday include Under The Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson as a predatory vampire; and Magic Magic, a drama from Chilean director Sebastián Silva. Interesting options at mainstream cinemas this weekend include Calvary with Chris O’Dowd and Brendan Gleeson, pictured; and new Hammer horror The Quiet Ones.

VISUAL ART: Gareth Kennedy and Sarah Browne will be at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork on Thursday to offer insight into their film work The Myth of the Many in the One. It dips into the stories told about such tech luminaries as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Irish painter Felim Egan has curated a collection of work entitled This Is Also Gaza which opens at the RHA in Dublin today. Egan went to Gaza last year to meet some of the artists living there, and aims to show an artistic side of the besieged territory with which most people would be unfamiliar.
