As you are have probably gathered by now the first thing any budding wine enthusiast needs to learn about is grape varieties.

However in recent years even this subject has got more complicated, thanks to DNA research.

In the late 1990s researchers at UC Davis in California discovered that Cabernet Sauvignon was in fact a crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. This seems completely obvious when you see it written down, but was a huge surprise to the wine world. This early DNA research is ongoing as although DNA can identify parent-offspring relationships, it cannot tell you which is the parent so there is still work to be done on some varieties.
