Online and in the shops: Engineer your life

Engineers Week 2014 begins this Sunday, February 9, with engineering-related events around the country.

Online and in the shops: Engineer your life

The week aims to showcase engineering — its career possibilities and the role of engineers in our community. Events include a day of family fun at Lifetime Lab, in Cork ( www.lifetimelab.ie), Saturday, February 15, from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free and activities will include programming LEGO robots, Giant Jenga, KNEX Construction Challenges, make-and-do, face-painting and lots more. Ava Murphy, 5 and Jayden Kinsella, 5, pictured, helped at the event’s launch.

Flowers at a snip: Children love to pick out flowers for mum. This Valentine’s Day, Aldi is offering bouquets at a snip of the price. Aldi’s dozen red roses are €7.99; or the less traditional two dozen red tulips are €6.99. The Valentine’s bouquets will be in stores from Wednesday, February 12; www.aldi.ie.

Gifting a loved one with a tree or a plant is a lasting gesture. Here are Arboretum’s top picks, along with their meanings: Syringa Prestoniae Mix (Lilac), €19.99 — first love; Trumpeter Rose, €8.99 — passionate love; Malus Red Love Apple Tree, €29.99 — happiness; Wisteria ‘Amethyst Falls’, €29.99 — romance and great and enduring love; www.arboretum.ie.

Chinese new year: The 15-day celebrations to mark the Chinese new year began on January 31. In Dublin, events include a carnival in Temple Bar tomorrow (see cny.ie). 2014 is the year of the horse in the Chinese zodiac. Those born under this sign are passionate, intelligent, determined and ambitious. If you want a keepsake for a baby born this year, Cross has designed a limited-edition ‘year of the horse’ pen collection. In Imperial Red or Imperial White, the collection is available in ball point (€250), rolling ball (€300), and fountain pen (€400). Each pen is presented in a gift box, with a removable display stand and lifetime guarantee. Available from Easons, Keanes, and other stockists nationwide and at www.cross.com.
