James make for a surprisingly convincing nostalgia act. They’ve released two albums since 2010 and are about to put out another, but the Manchester indie band understand that their audience really only wants to hear their 25-year catalogue of hits. You get the impression that, the presence of the occasional new number on the setlist notwithstanding, James are more than happy to oblige.
In the 1990s, Tim Booth was alternative pop’s flounciest frontman. He favoured loose-fitting sweaters and wore his hair in curly straggles, in the manner of someone who’d flirted with dreadlocks but couldn’t muster the commitment to go all the way. Aged 53, he is now the owner of a gleaming pate and a new-age goatee, while his dress sense might be described as ‘yoga guru chic’.
