Pompidou brings Grey to IMMA

ALONG with Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, Eileen Gray ranks among the architects and designers who have left a significant mark on the 20th century and defined modernity.

Pompidou brings Grey to IMMA

A retrospective devoted to the Irish designer at the Centre Pompidou in Paris this year until May is to be shown at the Irish Museum of Modern art (IMMA) from Oct 12 to Jan 19 next.

The Pompidou show highlighted the work of an artist who managed to associate tremendous technical virtuosity with an inimitable poetic force, excelling particularly in lacquer and textiles, but also in a new conception of space and of the relationship to furniture and objects. The retrospective features furniture, photographs, scale models, documents, several of her carpet designs, samples from her Paris shop Jean Désert and key items of furniture from her work on the apartment of Madame Mathieu Levy and Gray’s own home, Tempe à Pailla.
