Diverse items at art and design sale

The two-day decorative art and design sale at Mealy’s in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny next Tuesday and Wednesday offers everything from a finely stuffed curlew to ebonised brass bar taps, a Huxley roulette wheel and 500 lots of furniture. This diverse sale — themed “Summer Thrift” — has 1,200 lots and is the biggest clearance auction at Mealy’s in decades.

It offers 19th and early 20th century furniture, around 200 paintings, ceramics, oriental art, garden furniture, clocks, carpets, books and nickel-plated car mascots. Estimates are from €10 to €2,000 euro and the sale is expected to realise more than €200,000.

Viewing is from noon to 5pm tomorrow and from 10am to 5pm on Monday. The auctions start at 10am on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the fine weather did not deter a large crowd from attending the Hegarty’s auction at Acton’s Hotel in Kinsale last Sunday evening.

A pair of antique Newtonian globes sold for €7,800, an Irish secretaire made €5,300, a pair of percussion pistols sold for €4,350 and a flintlock rifle made €4,100. An Irish side table was unsold but remained under active negotiation after the auction.
