Evidence suggests that an expectant mother’s intake of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy influences the development of her baby, in the womb and after birth. Taking a fish-oil supplement that contains omega-3s, from the 30th week of gestation, has been shown, in a study published in The Lancet, to increase the length of pregnancy by four days and result in babies with a higher birth weight. Omega-3s are important for the development of a baby’s rapidly growing brain, and the need for DHA is greater in the last trimester of pregnancy, and up to 18 months. Allergy study
