Scissor Sisters Olympia, Dublin

When Scissor Sisters released their angsty, confused 2010 album Night Work, there was a distinct sense of a band stumbling to the end of its lifespan.

The New York quintet have evidently decided the smartest course is to recapture some of their early zing. Certainly, they have rebounded impressively with the recent Magic Hour album, an LP that channels the Lower East side gay scene edginess of their 2004 debut.

In a baying, up-for-a-great-time Olympia, Scissor Sisters throw themselves into the performance with relish. Wearing an eye-grabbingly odd jacket, Jake Shears is a rubber-limbed attention magnet, his singing a gleefully over-wrought mix of The Bee Gees and Donna Summer.

He has to vie for the spotlight with singer Ana Matronic, who wears an emerald gown so bright it is probably visible several time-zones away.

Musically, they step from the sweet to the sublime. Propulsive opener ‘Any Which Way’ ushers you into the world’s most OTT gay disco; the epic ‘Only The Horses’ shows what the Sisters can achieve when they let themselves off the leash.

Of course, it’s the oldies that truly set the room alight: ‘Take Your Mama’ prompts spontaneous stranger-hugging on the balcony, ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’’ finds Shears, by now shirtless and ridiculously buff, moving like a man whose underpants are about to catch fire.
