Joe Hogan has been making baskets at Loch na Fooey since 1978. This basket is made from bog pine gathered at the Dirks, a wild isolated area of cutaway bog near where he lives. He tells me there are interesting fragments of bog pine roots which are aged more than 3,000 years. He tries to join pieces together to make shapes which seem natural and then weaves them together to make forms which he calls bog pouches. This basket was on exhibition at EPPA in Belgium and will be on exhibition at the Portfolio exhibition at the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny which opens in January 2013.
