Rarities under the hammer at convent

MANY of the antique lots from the Lynes and Lynes auction at Loreto Convent, Fermoy are in original and untouched condition.

The no reserves sale at 11am today has attracted considerable interest from collectors of furniture, silver and glass. Rarities include a large oil painting of the crucifixion in a wooded landscape measuring 7’ by 5’.

The 19th century or possibly earlier work is by an artist who is as yet unidentified.

Other rarities include a pair of First Period Belleek jardinieres bearing the Black Mark, a Victorian sideboard originally from Castlemartyr (1,000-1,500), an Irish harp by James McFall, Belfast (500-1,000), a key hole case Irish longcase clock with three train movement and brass weights by Patrick Donegan, Dublin (2,000-3,000), a Victorian drawing room chair with its original upholstery (200-400) and a Bohemian ruby glass collection including ewers and comport to be sold as separate lots.

There is Irish and English silver as well as garden furniture, old pine furniture and the contents of two kitchens.

The remaining sisters from the Loreto community, which has been in Fermoy since the middle of the 19th century, have moved to houses locally.
