Silver auction has something for all

Ahead of an art sale, Des O’Sullivan reports

An Irish George III tureen is at Woodward’s, Cork on Wednesday next, it is estimated at €12,000- €14,000.

With everything from dish rings and tureens, to salvers and stationary boxes, the silver and art auction at Woodward’s next Wednesday has something for all. Cork makers featured include Carden Terry, Jane Williams, Richard Garde and William Egan.

Numerous Irish makers are represented among more than 200 lots of silver with estimates from €20 upwards.

There is work by Royal Irish Silver, Mappin and Webb and Georg Jensen among the modern makers and the sale features a number of prized antique pieces like a George III bright cut sugar basket by William Doyle, and a George III Irish soup tureen with a later lid made in 1821.

Collectibles include a Victorian tortoiseshell stationary box and a Gallé glass vase. Artists featured include Arthur Maderson, Markey Robinson, Kenneth Webb, William Hollyer and Norah McGuinness.

Viewing is from 2pm- 5pm tomorrow and from 10.15am-5pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The sale is on Wednesday at 6pm.
