Just in store
“Everyone’s ready for their close up all the time these days, aren’t they?” says James Brown, he of Great British Hairdresser fame. But there’s more to Brown’s repertoire than that: Photo Fabulous is his new affordable care and styling range and the tagline ‘always be camera ready’ is a nod to how pervasive social media now is in our lives.
With that in mind, the range includes high-performance products to get you looking Facebook-ready like shampoo and conditioner, both €8.79, and Wave Spray, €9.79. Great packaging and a retro, floral fragrance seal the pic-perfection deal.
For anyone looking to get into makeup or build a decent kit, Inglot’s a brilliant bet. New in are 20 pan Freedom palettes, and you’re the boss. Choose your pick of shade and finish to build a custom selection you’ll get maximum use out of. At €105, it seems pricey until you do the maths — that’s 20 high-quality colours for just €5.25 each. Bargain!
Off-kilter scent brand Escentric Molecule has built a reputation on offering a point of difference. Releasing two complimentary fragrances for each launch, high-end Cork city boutique Samui has just taken on the range. The Escentric 01and Molecule 01 scents are €75 each and will go perfectly with a little directional fashion.
A gal’s gotta have something gorgeous in her make-up bag and this pretty blusher from Mac fits the bill. Surf Baby Cheek Powder in My Paradise, €25, mixes coral and gold together for a cheeky shimmer.
First we were wowed by vibrating gizmos and now Bourjois brings us a new swit-swoo mechanised mascara.Volume Fast and Perfect, €16.99, rotates two ways to coat lashes perfectly. It takes a bit of practice, but once you’ve got the hang of it we dare you to go back to basics.
I’m never too wowed by eye creams, believing them to be one area of skincare in which beauty companies consistently over-promise. Estée Lauder’s new Idealist Cooling Eye Illuminator, €55, now previewing at Brown Thomas, looks promising. A contoured ceramic tip cools, so that helps with puffiness, and illuminating particles make dark circles appear brighter. It’s a cosmetic effect, sure, but one many women will be delighted with. That’s not all — the gloop works over time to strengthen weak capillaries and reduce hyper-pigmentation, two big causes of dark circles.
OH, you’re not alone. But help is at hand. The Body Shop’s ebullient international makeup artist Karim Sattar was in Ireland last week so we nabbed him for a chat.
First things first — for day, ditch the sparkles and go matte. “This year we’ve got bronzers for differing skintones,” Sattar reveals, so you can bag one for a cool tone or a warmer skin.
Pick the product that’s right for you with help from counter staff and you’ll be half-way there from the off.
Now, application: avoid putting bronzer all over the face. “Definitely spare the brow and lip areas and use a kabuki brush in large circular motions to apply colour evenly,” he instructs.
Lastly? To get the look as natural as possible, don’t forget to apply some product to ears and blend down the neck.
Try: The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder, €20.50, available in four shades.
