Books for children
The lazy ladybird sleeps so much she has never learnt to fly, so she hitches rides on various creatures. But the unsuspecting hosts bounce, growl, swing, splash and scratch. Press the button on each page to hear them — plus the lazy ladybird’s snores. The child-friendly print and repetitive refrain make this a perfect book to share with ages 2 — 5.
, by David McPhail (Frances Lincoln €14.70 HB), is a story of upsetting events witnessed by a small boy who has set out to post a letter. As he walks along a bleak street, the first sign of violence is an explosive air attack. Clutching his letter, the boy silently observes other nasty shocks on his terrifying journey. But when he becomes the victim of a mugger, his pent up anger triggers a resounding NO! That meaningful word, the only one in the story, causes the perpetrators to think about their actions. This superbly illustrated book cleverly expresses how one small voice can make a difference in this world.
