Ugg boots

If anyone in your household received a pair of Ugg boots or slippers from Santa at Christmas, chances are the last few weeks of inclement weather may have them looking a little worse for wear. Here are some tips on keeping them clean from the inside out.

How to clean the exterior

Classic UGG boots are made with pretreated suede to endure occasional rain and snow but this can quickly turn grubby. If you’re tempted to pop your boots in the washing machine, don’t rush to it as the Ugg brand says “machine-washing or dry-cleaning them can cause damage beyond repair”.

Instead, starting at the top and brushing downward, brush the fabric gently to loosen and remove any dirt or dust. You can also spot-treat dry stains with a suede or soft-bristle brush to lift off the stain.

Avoid soaking them and opt instead to use a wet sponge to lightly dampen the surface. Oversaturating the suede can allow water to seep into the lining. Use a suede shampoo or a one-to-one mixture of water and white vinegar, and apply from the top with gentle circular motions. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove the cleanser.

For boots that are starting to stink, or to avoid smells slipping through, there’s a simple way to remove odours. As well as regularly airing your boots or slippers, while they are wet stuff them with newspaper to naturally remove odours and help to retain their natural shape as they dry.

Don’t be tempted by the tumble dryer, even a gentle cycle can cause damage to the fabric. Place them in a cool, well-ventilated area for between 24 and 48 hours to dry.

How to clean the lining

You can also clean the lining of your boots or slippers without resorting to the washing machine.

Dampen the lining with a damp, soapy cloth and gently scrub, applying pressure as needed. Rinse, wring, and re-wet the cloth and repeat the previous step without the soap to remove any residue.

Again, place them in a cool, well-ventilated area for between 24 and 48 hours to dry. For an even-fresher scent, sprinkle half a cup of bicarbonate of soda inside the boot or slipper and leave them overnight. Shake out the bicarbonate of soda the following morning, it will have absorbed any remaining odours.

How often should I clean Uggs?

It is recommended that you deep clean your Uggs twice a year to both remove stains and prevent stains from settling in the fabric. You should also brush the outer lining in one direction after each wear to maintain the fabric.

With regular maintenance, Ugg says your boots and slippers can last up to 10 years. To aid with this, avoid wearing them in wet conditions as well as in the summer heat. You can also replace the sheepskin insoles as often as needed.
