Oh my God, Ross book voted best ever

DUBLIN 4’s best-loved Celtic Tiger cub Ross O’Carroll Kelly’s latest adventure has been crowned the country’s all-time favourite book.

Oh my God, Ross book voted best ever

The Oh My God Delusion was selected by the public from a shortlist of 125 books compiled by Eason’s bookstores to mark its 125th anniversary. It beat heavyweight classics such as To Kill a Mocking Bird and Catch 22 in the online poll.

Thousands of people cast their votes on titles ranging from classics to modern literature, crime novels to children’s books, but it was O’Carroll Kelly who came out on top. Some notable absences from the top 10 included James Joyce’s Ulysses, Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray and even Roald Dahl’s The BFG.

Paul Howard, author of the Ross O’Carroll Kelly collection, said it was an honour to top the poll.

“Ross is a creature of the boom; he began his journey at the start of the Celtic Tiger years. He became a vehicle to vent some of the frustration that I was experiencing during the boom watching the changes that were happening in Irish society.”

Mr Howard said the Celtic Tiger madness was reflected in his books and the Irish sense of humour appreciates that.

“It’s very real, Ross lived through an era of privilege and then, like many, the old certainties he grew up with were gone.

“It’s comedy with an edge, a lot of people can look back on the Celtic Tiger era and laugh at some of the ridiculous excesses that people went through.”
