Use your loaf: Eight sandwiches put to the taste test
Time to use your loaf and read sandwich guide.

For those watching carb intake, an open sandwich is a good idea, though you won’t feel deprived with this decent chunk of in-house brown. Topped with gently spiced beef, shredded cabbage, cucumber, softly spiced beetroot relish, and rocket, this is a superb sandwich liked by all tasters.
At 20, Anglesea Street, Cork.
Wholesome, brown yeast Arbutus bread holds decent slices of delicious, thick maple-roasted ham, thickly grated cheddar cheese, tomato and zinging rocket. They do a great Reuben too, as well as terrific salads. Two tasters liked this filling best, and loved the bread.
At Marina Villas, Albert Road, Cork.
From an excellent range, this Reuben divided tasters; half thought the beef overspiced, the other, just perfect. The rest of the filling — emmenthal, sauerkraut, gherkins, and dressing — were unanimously voted superb.

From any blend of components on the counter with Arbutus white or brown yeast bread, tasters loved the Coronation chicken and lettuce and egg mayo. Good bread from Arbutus Breads had enough flavour to need little else. Good value. At St Lukes Cross, Cork

Chicken with pesto is generous, and salad has good, natural flavours in substantial in-house brown bread. One taster thought it would be the one to buy for children as it seemed low in salt and had no overpowering flavours.
On Paul Street, Cork.
The best of the supermarket offerings we found, the poppy seed white bread was light and had no dense dampness as found in many other supermarkets which didn’t make our Top 8. It still held the moistness of the heavily mayonnaised chicken breast, stuffing and lettuce. A little high in stuffing and low in chicken.

Sourdough and a range of ingredients chosen at the counter are chopped to suit. Our salmon and a few salads had no exceptional ingredients, with the lettuce not zinging with freshness on a Monday morning, but still a good blend with a spicy sauce to finish. Bread was a good texture. We paid an extra 50c for pumpkin seeds. In some Spar shops in Dublin and Cork; we bought on Patrick-Paul Street, Cork.

This was favoured for the tasty ham and creamy mustard dressing. A few tasters thought the bread a little thin and lacking in flavour. The cheapest of what we found at an acceptable quality level, it was one of the top supermarket offerings, with plenty of other choices in fillings available.
