On Wednesday, September 17, a 32.7-acre holding was successfully sold at auction by Gorey-based Quinn Property.

The farm in question is at Castlemacadam, near Avoca in Co Wicklow. A neat piece of quality grassland set between woodland and with a generous length of road frontage, the holding was naturally divided by the Dublin-Rosslare railway line, under which an underpass runs, linking the fields.

In advance of the online sale, auctioneer David Quinn noted: “Promising early interest in the property, primarily from local farmers and businessmen.”

There were five registered bidders before the auction, and the holding had a price guide of between €10,000 and €12,000/acre.

The lands were offered in the following lots:

  • Lot 1 of 26.7 acres;
  • Lot 2 of 6 acres;
  • Lot 3 was the entire holding.

After early bidding, Lots 1 and 2 reached a combined €340,000. However, it soon emerged that the main interest was in the entire holding, which surged to €500,000.

Upon instruction from the owners, Lots 1 and 2 were withdrawn and two bidders resumed battle. Once the price reached €600,000, it was declared on the market. Following one final bid, the hammer fell on a price of €620,000.

The buyer was a local farmer, and Mr Quinn congratulated the successful purchaser immediately after the auction.

“The clients were most pleased with the price achieved,” he added following the very successful sale.

Once again, it was an auction that exceeded expectations, with a sale price equating to almost €19,000/acre.
