The weather for the Ploughing: Brown boots or wellies?

Your weather forecast ahead of the biggest culchie event of the year: The Ploughing Championships 2025
The weather for the Ploughing: Brown boots or wellies?

Ditch the brown boots and bring the wellies this year.

The age-old question is on everyone's lips running up to the Ploughing Championships: “Should I bring my wellies?”

The answer this year is yes. No ifs or buts, bring your wellies, with rain forecast for all three days.

Met Éireann is currently reporting a good start to Tuesday with temperatures reaching as high as 14C. Still, rain is expected to start around 3pm and progressively worsen as the day continues, with thunderstorms and rain persisting well into the night and into Wednesday morning.

Rain is forecast to end by 7am on Wednesday, which will be a dry and blustery day with isolated showers and sunny spells. Temperatures are forecasted to reach highs of 17C.

Proceed with caution when parking on the soft ground on day two — no one wants a repeat of 2023 — and make sure those wellies don’t have holes, but you'll figure that out pretty quickly.

Thursday is set to see temperatures reach 16C by the afternoon, with a rogue shower at 4pm forecasted to bless the Ploughing grounds with 3.3mm of rain as a send-off to the crowds.

Exhibitors at the Ploughing have also taken to social media, showing the already muddy walkways as well as the stands you can expect to see at the biggest culchie event of the year.

In short, bring your wellies, risk the brown boots if you dare, and do not be the person tiptoeing around the grounds in runners. What would the neighbours think?
