Upward momentum for beef cattle continues
The premium being paid on heifers over the steer price has tightened to range 5c/kg or less this week. But for those with Angus or Hereford to offer, the breed bonus is worth up to 30c/kg extra, pushing the returns out to in excess of €7/kg.
Such is the ongoing competition between the beef processors to secure their requirements of weekly intake at the factories that a consistent upward movement on price has now become the accepted norm.
Supply is continuing strong by traditional parameters, but the buoyant export market for Irish beef has never before been at, or near, its present level of consumer demand.
