Signpost: My hesitancy in moving to using sexed semen for the first time

As it is our first year using sexed semen, I only ordered half the Friesian straws as sexed.
The reason I was slow to move to sexed semen was it took a long time to get the six-week calving rate up to where it is (92%), and I was very slow to do anything to compromise this.

Breeding is going well so far. We have 26% of the herd submitted in six days. The cows have collars which detect when they are in heat. This year, I have decided to use sexed semen for the first time.

As it is our first year using sexed semen, I only ordered half the Friesian straws as sexed. The collars are great as they give an exact window (14-20 hours after heat onset) of when is the best time to AI a cow with a sexed straw, so I probably should have ordered more sexed straws.
