It is in the four or five-star female replacement strategy that SCEP participants could be worst affected by the recent changes made to the calculation of the EuroStar indexes of cattle, advised Teagasc Ballina drystock advisor James Fitzgerald, in his recent article to clear some of the confusion and uncertainty among suckler cow farmers since the indexes changed.

At worst, he suggested, a farmer with a scheme reference number of 20 cows might lose €2,340 from the €15,000 available for those fully compliant with all five requirements of the scheme for all five years.
