There may also be a chance to gather some surplus bales as we go into the first few weeks of September, before we begin building grass covers on the farm, writes Bernard Stack.

Now that the majority of silage pits and yards are as full as can be, it’s time to take stock of what feed is available before it’s too late. Due to one of the wettest July on record, many farms in the southwest of the country were forced to eat into surplus silage supplies early in the summer. In some yards, this has put a dent in the amount of silage carried for the winter months.
