Limerick hurlers win the National Dairy Show supreme championship

Attendance estimated at over 4,500 at Millstreet showcase of Ireland’s pedigree dairy breeding and trade exhibition

Limerick hurlers win the National Dairy Show supreme championship

Donal is looking forward to bringing the impressive Dairy Show cup and the Liam MacCarthy Cup together, as the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship trophy continues on its travels through Limerick, writes Stephen Cadogan

“It’s nearly up there with Limerick winning the All- Ireland,” said Donal Neville, after his Milliedale Dusk Rhapsody EX 95 won the Irish Examiner National Dairy Show supreme championship last Saturday.

It’s no faint praise, from a man who has represented Limerick in over-40 Masters hurling.

And it was another great National Dairy Show advertisment for Irish family dairy farming, with Donal and his wife Kathleen running the Emerald Holsteins herd (Michael Lane completes the full-time staff) at Croagh, Co Limerick, between Adare and Rathkeale.

At the halter, as seven glistening Holstein Friesians paraded in show judge’s Edward Griffiths line-up for the final, was Thomas Neville, winner of numerous handling championships across Ireland and Europe over the past 10 years. He works with the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (he is a hurler too, with Douglas in Cork).

Helping out were Caitriona and Ann Neville, both former Irish handler champions.

Caitriona is a nurse and Ann works with Kerry Group in Charleville.

Donal says the family help makes it possible to them to take part in shows, which paid off this year with Milliedale Dusk Rhapsody’s championship win at Charleville and the reserve championship in Diageo’s Baileys Cow.

Already bringing home many handler rosettes from Millstreet year after year, the Nevilles made a breakthrough with their bloodlines in 2015, winning the confined championship.

And the supreme championship last Saturday in the Green Glens Arena, Millstreet, at Ireland’s premier indoor agricultural event, puts them at the top of the tree in the fiercely competitive Irish dairy breeding scene.

“It’s the one to win,” said Thomas Neville.

Meanwhile, Donal is looking forward to bringing the impressive Dairy Show cup and the Liam MacCarthy Cup together, as the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship trophy continues on its travels through Limerick.

Having purchased Milliedale Dusk Rhapsody 12 months ago as a new bloodline in his herd, he was thrilled with her added success in the show ring Saturday, where she also won the mature cow class. She is one of 120 pedigree Holstein Friesians on their farm.

As well as showing the overall runner-up, Rickey Barrett’s Laurelelm Herd was the Show’s Premier Breeder, Premier Exhibitor, and Best Udder winner.

A big attendance estimated at over 4,500 at the National Dairy Show, which was officially opened by Sean Kelly, MEP, indicated that pedigree dairy breeding is here to stay, even at a time of great change in the dairy industry.

Lower yielding crossbred cattle have made inroads into the dairy industry, but breeders at Millstreet on Saturday were confident that pressures on the industry to become more efficient, to reduce emissions, will favour pedigree cows. “These are much more profitable than crossbreds, and better for the environment,” said Donal Nevile. “I don’t know why they are not encouraged more.”

In his show opening speech, Sean Kelly MEP assured the large attendance that there will be a Brexit deal.

“I am confident that a withdrawal agreement will be reached in December. I believe there is a will for a deal to be done, and when that is present in Brussels, even though we usually go until the 11th hour, an agreement will ultimately be reached.”

Agriculture Minister Michael Creed also attended the Show, organised by members of the Cork Holstein Friesian Association, in conjunction with the Irish Holstein Friesian Association.

Trade exhibitors had a record number of display stands at Saturday’s event.
