The land close to the Kerry border in North Cork is a zone of mixed farming and of mixed quality land. The area on both sides of the border is more associated with smaller farming units, compared with the richer pastures of places like the Golden Vale, or Co Meath.

It is here, however, that one of the largest farms to come on the market in Munster so far this year is located. Just 2km to the north of Kiskeam, and close to the Kerry border, a 154-acre farm is currently for sale with Dunmanway-based auctioneer Daniel Lehane.

“This is a farm of mixed quality land,” confirms Daniel, “and it’s laid out in one block.”

The lands, he says, are easily accessed via the R577 that leads from Kiskeam to Boherbue. There isn’t any road frontage with the property, but access is clear, via a tarred road leading directly to the land.

Surrounding the holding is a mixture of pasture, rough grazing and forestry plantations. Once you enter this farmstead, there are two derelict dwellings surrounded by a number of outbuildings. The fields immediately surrounding the houses, yard and outbuildings are described by the agents as being of good quality, whilst the remainder of the land consists of rough grazing.

As is usually the case with a holding of this size, the selling agents are presenting with the option of buying it in two lots – both of which are divided more-or-less evenly. Lot 1 consists of 77 acres lying to the west of the central roadway, and Lot 2 consists of 76.8 acres on the eastern side.

The entire property is also available as a lot.

“There is an old dwelling house on each lot, so there is the potential with both lots to have a house.

“It’s land that might need a lot of work put into it to bring it up to the standard of good arable land, but it is a significant block of land in an area where there is plenty of industrious farming going on.

“Alternatively, what we have found over the last 12 months is that there are quite a lot of forestry pension funds that are actively buying tracts of land, and this is also the kind of the land that would qualify for planting.”

Boherbue is 7.5km away, Kanturk is 18km, Ballydesmond is 8km away, and Castleisland over the border in Kerry is 25km distant.

The guide price on the entire holding is €830,000, or €5,400/acre.
