More than two times normal weekly rainfall

Parts of Munster and Leinster got more than two times their normal rainfall over the past week, bringing a halt to harvesting and damaging grazing conditions for livestock.

Figures from Met Éireann weather stations showed that, outside of Co Dublin, where rainfall was normal or below normal, no area got less than 122% of normal rainfall.

And deluges totalled 73.3mm at Valentia in Co Kerry last week, 256% of normal rainfall.

No far behind was Co Carlow, with the weather station at Oakpark recording 39.3mm, 242% of normal.

Cork Airport also had more than two times the normal rainfall, totalling 47.5 mm.

The 32.5mm at Malin Head, Co Donegal, and 37.9mm at Belmullet, Co Mayo, indicated no let-up for the North-West, which has endured more than 200 days of rain so far this year.

With the Midlands getting 20%-60% more than normal rainfall next week, conditions could be muddy at next week’s Ploughing Championships.

Met Éireann has predicted almost all places will receive a little less or around normal rainfall for much of the week ahead, but with poor drying due to cloudy skies, high relative humidities, and occasional rainfall.
