Big Iverk prizes went south
The competition for calves born late in 2015 was won by John Appelbe from Clonakilty.
Show organisers say their Angus Bull Calf Championships are one of the largest sponsorships (by Aldi and ABP) in any cattle class in Ireland and probably in Europe.
Having been runner-up to John Applebe in the first final, Keith Vickery of Rosscarbery went one better in the final for early 2016 calves, with Matthew Goulding, Tralee, Co Kerry, the runner-up, and John Applebe placed third.
In the Ulster Bank Pedigree Inter-Breed Beef Championship, the champion Charolais of Martin Ryan, Thurles, Co Tipperary came out on top in the line-up of the Charolais, Angus, Belgian Blue, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Hereford, Limousin and Shorthorn champs.
This entitled him to line-up for the Deloitte Ireland Iverk Championship, pitting him against the dairy and commercial champions.
The Charolais got the nod again, over no less a reserve than the dairy champion of Philip Jones, Gorey, Co Wexford, fresh from his Diageo Baileys Irish Champion win four days previously. In the dairy championship, the reserve was shown by Noel Murphy, Blarney, Cork.
There was another West Cork win when the Investec Wealth and Investment All-Ireland Broodmare and Foal Team Championship was decided, the culmination of qualifiers at many of the shows through the year.
The €1,000 first prize in this €4,300 competition went to Kieran Fahy, Enniskeane, Co Cork.
