Electronic displays at marts to be grant aided

Agriculture, Food and Marine Minister Michael Creed announced the €300,000 Mart Modernisation Scheme to assist in the purchase of new display screens.

These will provide real-time information on animals for sale, allowing farmers ringside in marts to view the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation star ratings for beef breeding stock and also Economic Breeding Indexes for dairy stock.

Mr Creed said the marts play a critical role in the trade of animals and it is essential the purchasers of stock have the most up-to- date information to inform their buying decisions.

This scheme will help to provide this information by linking real-time ICBF data for display on mart screens while animals are in the ring, he said.

The Irish Co-operative Organisation Society, which sought the support, said it welcomed the announcement by Mr Creed during a visit to Bandon Mart.

ICOS national marts executive Ray Doyle said farmers are increasingly buying animals due to their genetic profile, particularly in respect of dairy stock, rather than on how they look in the ring.
