Glanbia commits to sustainable milk price
IFA president Eddie Downey and dairy chairman Sean O’Leary met with Glanbia and GII chairman Henry Corbally and CEO Jim Bergin yesterday.
The IFA group restated the anger voiced by suppliers at Glanbia’s decision to cut 1c off its September milk price to 24c/l including Vat.
Mr Downey said: “While we recognise that markets are challenging, and that despite many positive signs there are still uncertainties around the supply/demand balance for the coming months, Glanbia suppliers have been alarmed by the unilateral price cut applied by their milk purchaser, which leaves them with one of the lowest milk prices this month.”
Glanbia expressed its commitment to paying consistently sustainable prices for the longer term.
The dairy processor assured the IFA it would address supplier concerns at regional meetings, but would also write individually to each supplier to outline its commitment to achieve this.
Mr O’Leary said the price cut was poorly timed as all other co-ops held, and with farmers reviewing their 2016 business plans.
