In all, 14 clubs have been whittled down to contest the semi-final which will take place at the weekend.

Seven will be chosen to go on to the national final which will take place at the Macra annual conference, better known as The Rally, which will be held this year at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on October 24.

The Club of the Year title recognises clubs’ efforts and achievements throughout the year, and is the highest accolade a club can achieve.

Those taking part in the semi-final on Saturday and Sunday are Cork clubs Mitchelstown Macra of the Avondhu region; Berrings Macra and Donoughmore Macra representing the Muskerry region; Glanmire Macra from the Seandún region; Kilmeen Macra of Carbery; and Carrigaline Macra of the Seandún region.

Also competing are Devils Bit Macra, North Tipperary; Ballylanders Macra from Co Limerick; Limerick City Macra; Hill 16 Macra, Dublin; Naas Macra, Co Kildare; Mountmellick Macra, Co Laois; Callan Macra, Co Kilkenny; and Ramor Macra, Co Cavan.

A Best New Member Award will also be presented as part of the competition to one individual Macra member who is deemed by his or her club to have made a significant contribution to its development during their first year of membership.

Speaking about the scheme, Macra president Seán Finan said: “Our members make a big impact on their clubs and local communities and we are recognising those efforts with the Club of the Year and Best New Member competitions.”

Last year’s awards took place in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, with Freemount Macra, Avondhu, Co Cork, taking the title.

The club received a cheque for €1,500 while runners-up Glanmire Macra, Seandún, Cork, and Limerick City Macra each received a cheque for €500.

Veronica Wheatley, East Laois Macra, was presented with the award for Best New Member, while Hill 16 Macra, Co Dublin, was awarded the Best Emerging Club Award.
