Macra news: Glanmire on mission to prove Macra is not just for farmers

Glanmire Macra members are on a mission to prove that Macra is not just for farmers. The Seandún club is hoping to boost membership and says “there is always something happening and somewhere to go”.

A spokesperson for the club said: “In Glanmire we aim to have at least one official club night out a month, but you can be guaranteed there are plenty more unofficial ones. This year we had everything from ice skating, bowling, cinema nights, outdoor adventure days, and pink parties for Breast Cancer Research.”

There are also weekends away at national events. Back in October, the club took the runner-up spot at the AIB Club of the Year final at the national conference for the second year in a row.

This year was also one of the club’s most successful on the competition front. Led by producer Daniel O’Regan, the club claimed the National Capers Champions title back in February with Fliuch ‘n’ Wet. In drama, members Will Daly, Tomás Cuffe, Mairéad O’Callaghan and Kathleen Fitzgerald, directed by Eltin Griffin, brought their play This Is A Play all the way to the national semi-final in April.

From September the club’s sports night will return to a weekly schedule at Upper Glanmire Community Hall and can be a great starting point for new members.

The club’s men’s Gaelic football team reached the national semi-final this year, and members also had great craic at Clonakilty Macra’s Fittest Club fundraiser, and a 10km Toughathlon.

In the spirit of the “give it a go” attitude that runs through the club, many members have signed up for debating and public speaking.

Last December talented trio Kathleen Fitzgerald, Jenny Murphy, and Karen Cashman came away with the national title in public speaking.

This year, the club’s biggest fundraising campaign stems from youth suicide. Members are currently fundraising for a skydive for Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland.

Log onto www.skydive. yspi.eu/glanmiremacra or contact any club member to donate. To find out more, find the club on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The first club meeting of the 2015/2016 year will take place on September 9 in Sars Pavilion.
