Sponsored by Aldi, the National Brown Bread Baking Competition was last held in 1973, and was revived in association with the ICA and the National Ploughing Association.

Betty, a member of the Rathkeevin ICA guild has been baking for 50 years but said she took it up in earnest only four years ago to help her through a very difficult period in her life.

”The secret of success in baking is a hot oven’” she said. “I more or less stick to the traditional brown flour, white flour, a bit of grain, butter and the buttermilk. She won €2,000 of Aldi vouchers.

Eight finalists took part at the Ploughing Championships.
