Government investment of more than €35m in 13 projects under the Beef and Sheep Meat Capital Investment Fund proceeded this year.

It supports capital investments designed to better utilise overall industry capacity through increased scale in primary processing, increased added value in further processing, and improved efficiencies to allow Irish companies compete internationally.

Meanwhile, the Government has announced that 580 new jobs were created in 2013 via 19 significant investments in the food and drink sector.

The figures were released as the Taoiseach, T•naiste and Minister for Jobs said the private sector has been adding on average 1,200 jobs per week for the past year.

CSO statistics showed that 22,500 jobs have been added across the country in three months; that the unemployment rate has decreased to 12.6%, and that the long-term unemployment rate has decreased from 8.9% to 7.6%.
