Inspectors visiting farms to assess CAP payment applications need training to raise their awareness of mental health issues, said MEP Mairead McGuinness.

The Ireland East MEP has written to Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney in his role as the head of the EU Court of Auditors to warn about the serious mental health consequences for some farmers arising from CAP farm inspections.

“I am perplexed and disturbed by the number of farmers deeply affected by both announced and unannounced farm inspections,” said Ms McGuinness. “These inspections are necessary. However, very often such inspections give rise to undue stress and worry for farmers and their families.
