Straw bales offer food for thought

Drivers on Cork’s South Link road were twisting in their seats to look at a truck delivering round bales of straw to West Cork on Monday.

The delivery was part of an ICSA initiative to alleviate pressure caused by a scarcity of winter fodder in the area.

ICSA West Cork chairman Dermot Kelleher said: “In some cases, cattle have been inside for weeks because of the ground conditions and not a single blade of grass has been cut for silage, because the machinery simply can’t go into the fields.”

The initiative followed a recent visit by ICSA president, Gabriel Gilmartin, to several farms in West Cork.
