Dawn backs price cut for out-of-spec bulls

The Dawn Meats Group has put forward the case for a 30c/kg cut in the price for many out-of-spec bulls coming through the beef system, compared to steers of comparable grade, based on bulls’ larger forequarters (containing the lower value cuts) with larger, plain and therefore lower value loins.

“This is before any quality attributes are discussed regarding older young bulls over 16 months of age,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

Dawn Meats has been emphasising that steer beef will remain the key to future success of the industry, despite increasing output of bull beef.
