FRIESIAN bulls in the Teagasc-Dawn Meats 19-month finishing trial at Johnstown Castle were slaughtered in September.

These bulls went to grass last spring as yearlings, until June, when they were housed and built up to ad-lib meals and straw.

The group that got no meals at grass as calves had an average carcass weight of 317kg, whereas those that got 2kg meal at grass had an average carcass weight of 324kg.
