Farm in beauty spot is tempting for YOPs

LIFE-CHANGING decisions are made in recessions — and a flight to the land is near the top of the list.

Farm in beauty spot is tempting for YOPs

In a society disenchanted with markets, money and monopolies, the ‘running away from it all’ philosophy comes to the fore.

Factor in the amount of lump-sum payments about to be made in the next two months, and you could have a lift in sales of marginal land, which is usually found in beautiful, unspoilt locations.

Properties like this at Castletownbere in west Cork may tempt the thousands of YOPs (young age pensioners) who are about to take early retirement from the public service next February.

Armed with decent pensions, a few bob in the bank, and probably with mortgages paid off, urbanites with the time and money, seeking spiritual renewal, could be drawn to properties like this one at Brackluin, near Allihies in Co Cork.

Estate agent Sarah O’Keeffe says the property is a jewel, with land running down to the sea in a location that’s so special a Buddhist centre was built nearby — and it’s thriving. “It’s an area of unspoilt beauty, overlooking the Atlantic ocean and cradled by the Caha mountains,” says O’Keeffe. She has an offer on part of this 20-acre residential holding.

The property consists of a classic two-up, two-down cottage, with entrance hall, kitchen, bathroom, living room, utility room, and two first-floor bedrooms. The house has cute stone outbuildings, and the land runs on both sides of the main road.

The current offer is €100,000 for the house and 1.5 acres, says O’Keeffe, and the property can be sold in one or a number of lots.

The farm is six miles from Castletownbere and seven miles from Allihies, close to Dunboy Castle and a couple of good beaches.
