FARMERS can declare an interest in growing a sugar beet crop by registering on the www.sugarbeet.ie website set up by the by the BEET Ireland (Beet Ethanol Energy Teoranta Ireland) group.

BEET Ireland is a steering group of supporters of resumption of sugar beet growing and sugar production and associated industries in Ireland. Including private industry interests and farmers, BEET Ireland is chaired by Michael Hoey, co-founder and managing director of the Country Crest food company.

Other members include Simon Cross, managing director of Cross Agricultural Engineering; and well-known former sugar beet growers Jim O’Regan, Cork; Willie French, Wexford; and Pat Cleary, Kildare.
