Sheep farming supports to remain, says Ciolos

EUROPEAN supports for sheep farming will be maintained under any reform of the CAP, according to EU Commissioner for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos.

Sheep farming supports to remain, says Ciolos

“Sheep have an important role to play not just in terms of food production, but also in maintaining Europe’s biodiversity goals and the environmental equilibrium,” said Commissioner Ciolos during his recent Dáil visit. “We will be trying to find specific funding instruments for some regions and certain products, and support for this kind of production will be maintained at present levels at the very least, or maybe even more than now.”

Mr Ciolos was replying to a question put to him by Fianna Fáil Senator Mary White, who noted that sheep farming was an integral part of many rural Irish communities. She also noted the ongoing ecological commitment of Irish farmers.
