Top prize money draws exhibitors to Bantry

TOP prize money drew livestock exhibitors from all corners of the country to the Bantry Agricultural Show in west Cork last Sunday.

With €10,000 on offer in seven championships, high-class animals were on show to the big attendance, many of whom arrived by ferry to the seaside showgrounds.

Unfortunately, heavy rain put a damper on the event, which has become one of the top shows since its revival in 1996, after a gap of almost 40 years.

Winners of the main championships were as follows.

Murnane & O’Shea Three-Year-Old Filly All Ireland Championship: 1. Anthony Gordon, Ballintubber Stud, Ballina, Co Mayo.

2. Kate McMahon, Athenry, Co Galway. 3. Alice Norton, Bunclody, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford. 4. Kieran Fahy, Enniskeane, Co Cork.

Celtic Ross Hotel Irish Draught Foal Munster Championship: James Whyte, The Pike, Clonakilty, Co Cork. Reserve: Sam Burchill, Rineen, Skibbereen, Co Cork.

(Colt: 1. James Whyte. Reserve: Dermot O’Brien, Ballyneety, Co Limerick.

Filly: 1. Sam Burchill. Reserve: John Corbett, Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

Champion Mare: 1. Ray Cahalane, Union Hall, Co Cork. 2. PJ Lehane, Clonakilty, Co Cork.

Champion foal: 1. Kieran Fahy, Enniskeane, Co Cork. 2. PJ Lehane.

Champion Ridden Pony: Finbarr McCarthy, Union Hall, Co Cork. Reserve: Simon Byrne, Fermoy, Co Cork.
