Bonnet tribute to Oz convict women
The concept of Christina Henri, an artist completing her PhD in visual and performing arts at the University of Tasmania, it involves making a bonnet similar to that worn at the time to commemorate the life and contribution the women made towards the founding of a new nation.
Christina will be in Ireland with some of the bonnets to present the story of the women they represent in words and music. On this Sunday, there will be a blessing of the bonnets in the Cobh Heritage Centre at 3pm. A concert will also be held narrated by Christina. Many well-known musicians, whose songs have been based on the stories of convict transportation will be performing.
ICA members are encouraged to come to Cobh, the port from which many were transported to Australia — to show support for the commemorations and for Christina and others who have travelled here from the other side of the world.
