Farm ‘ultimate breakaway home’

SURROUNDED by acres of mountain and bounded by a babbling brook, this farm of 309 acres near Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, is ideal for those seeking splendid isolation.

Farm ‘ultimate breakaway home’

The guide price of €350,000 may tempt those looking for the ultimate breakaway home.

It has proven investment potential, having made a 200% return for its American owner, when half of the original 1,000 acre holding sold some years ago.

Non-availability of credit in Ireland may leave the field for this type of property wide open once more for the foreign buyers who fled for the last five years because of our huge property price inflation.

The American vendor bought the property when he came to Kenmare on his honeymoon and decided he’d like to spend time in Ireland. This he did until recently, letting out the land for grazing.

The old farmhouse was remodelled, but will need further insulation and a bit of airing, says Elaine Daly of Sherry FitzGerald Daly, because it hasn’t been used in quite a while.

However, it offers simple but comfortable accommodation of 1,000 square feet, up to cabin-in-the-woods standards, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and some nicely laid-out living space.

The property is six miles from Kilgarvan and 12 miles from Kenmare. The river Slaheny forms a boundary on two sides of the house. The former home of the Sweeney family, it is called Ned’s House, says Elaine Daly, and it is accessed by a bridge from the old Bantry road.

The house is west-facing and to the south there’s an Ogham stone, said to mark the resting place of a warrior killed in a battle at nearby Inchamore more than 2,000 years ago.

The property has 1.5 miles of river frontage, a few good quality fields, and the rest is for sheep grazing.

The agents may be prepared to sell in two lots, with the house and nine acres on offer at €260,000.

The house and 309 acres are on offer at €350,000.
