Gasification boilers join energy scheme

GASIFICATION boilers are being added to phase three of the Greener Homes Scheme, which grant aids homeowners to invest in domestic renewable energy heating.

Applications to phase two of the scheme closed on Monday, July 7.

Phase three applications will be accepted from July 22.

More than 22,000 grant commitments have been made to householders in the first two phases of the Greener Homes Scheme, 26% in the biomass area, 26% for heatpump technology, and 48% for solar thermal energy.

The announcement of phase three is timed to coincide with the recent coming into force of revised building regulations which introduce a compulsory requirement for some renewable energy in all new homes.

The main changes in phase three are that only existing (at least one-year-old) houses will be eligible for support, and there will be a small reduction in the level of support for existing biomass technologies. But gasification boilers are being added to the scheme.

Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Eamon Ryan said, “The installation of renewable heating systems in existing homes is typically more complex and therefore more expensive, and so I believe merits continued support in the short term at least while the market reaches ultimate maturity.”
